**I’d choose Instapaper for simple reading, Readwise Reader for research, or Wallabag for a self-hosted archive.** Before moving your saved articles, test **two files: one code-heavy article and one PDF**. Check offline access, code formatting, and whether exports contain full text - not just links.

[Pocket](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_\(service\)) closed on July 8, 2025, and its export window ended on October 8, 2025. If you’re switching now, you’ll need an export you already saved. [Omnivore](https://github.com/omnivore-app/omnivore) has also shut down.

My shortlist covers **eight options**, from article readers to research tools and built-in browser lists.

**Quick Comparison**

| Option | Best for | Cost | Export limits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instapaper | Simple reading and offline articles | Free; Premium $59.99/year | HTML and CSV aren’t full article backups |
| Readwise Reader | PDFs, RSS, transcripts, and synced notes | $9.99/month billed annually | Markdown and CSV; check what each includes |
| Matter | Newsletters and reading on Apple devices | Free; web Premium $60/year | No full-library export listed |
| Raindrop.io | Bookmarks, PDFs, and project folders | Free; Pro about $28/year | Bookmark exports don’t include saved page copies |
| Wallabag | Self-hosting and article ownership | Free self-hosted; hosted €11/year | Several formats, including JSON, EPUB, and PDF |
| Zotero | Papers, citations, and PDF notes | Free; extra cloud storage costs more | Check references, notes, and attachments |
| Browser reading lists | A short article queue | Free | Limited; varies by browser |
| [daily.dev](https://daily.dev/) bookmarks | Saving articles from a developer feed or [programming forums](https://daily.dev/blog/11-best-programming-forums-2024) | Free core features | No export details listed |

My main rule: <u>don’t confuse sync with a backup</u>. A tool can make reading easy while making it hard to leave. I’d compare _reading quality, offline access, annotations, price, and exports_ before importing an entire library.

## 1\. [Instapaper](https://www.instapaper.com/)

Instapaper is the cleanest Pocket-style option for simple article saving and offline reading.

### Saving content

Save articles with browser extensions, mobile share sheets, or a dedicated email address for [web development newsletters](https://daily.dev/blog/10-useful-web-development-newsletters). **The free tier includes unlimited article saves.**[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[7\]](https://readplace.com/blog/best-read-it-later-apps-2026)

### Reading and annotation

Instapaper downloads article text to your mobile devices so you can read offline. For code-heavy articles, stick with the app: ePub exports can break formatting on e-readers. Free accounts get five notes or highlights per month. Premium removes that cap.[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[8\]](https://www.burn451.cloud/blog/read-it-later-app)[\[9\]](https://www.bigiron.cc/guides/wallabag-vs-omnivore-vs-shiori)

### Organization and integrations

Sort articles into folders by topic, then use tags for more specific sorting—one of several [ways for web developers to stay updated](https://daily.dev/blog/5-practical-ways-for-web-developers-to-stay-updated-in-the-latest-tech-news). Searching by tag requires Premium. [Kobo](https://www.kobo.com/us/en?srsltid=AYCX9vLiBwHRB6vATQ28dtf-32tLJtWrqwWz5H6xaxAafUpl01Nw48hp) sync is free, but Kindle delivery and digests require Premium. Developers can build custom integrations with the [Instapaper API](https://www.instapaper.com/api).[\[3\]](https://dev.to/fisher_shenfisher_1c32/pocket-alternative-2026-the-complete-guide-after-pockets-shutdown-4mpe)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)[\[7\]](https://readplace.com/blog/best-read-it-later-apps-2026)[\[8\]](https://www.burn451.cloud/blog/read-it-later-app)

### Pricing and exports

Instapaper offers HTML and CSV exports, but these are separate from its archive. [Premium](https://www.instapaper.com/premium) costs **$5.99 per month** or **$59.99 per year**. It adds full-text search, unlimited notes, and a permanent archive that keeps article text even if the source disappears. Check both the export options and archive before relying on Instapaper for long-term portability.[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)[\[10\]](https://tuckii.app/blog/best-pocket-alternatives-2026)

## 2\. [Readwise Reader](https://readwise.io/read)

### Saving content

Instapaper keeps things simple. Reader is a stronger fit for developers who save content in several formats. Use browser extensions and a dedicated newsletter email address to bring web articles, PDFs, EPUBs, newsletters, and RSS feeds into **one inbox**.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[12\]](https://pithlab.app/best/read-it-later-alternatives)

### Reading and annotation

Reader works on iOS, Android, web, and desktop, with [Chrome](https://www.google.com/chrome/) and [Firefox](https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/) extensions, offline reading, and text search. The reading view supports code blocks in technical articles. Highlights, notes, and Ghostreader’s summaries and document questions help you dig into what you read.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[13\]](https://stashr.me/blog/best-read-it-later-apps)

### Organization and integrations

Tags and saved filters keep reference material separate from your reading queue. Highlights and notes sync automatically to tools such as [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/) and [Notion](https://www.notion.so/). For casual readers, though, the interface can feel heavy.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)

### Pricing and exports

Reader comes with **[Readwise Full](https://readwise.io/pricing)** at **$12.99 per month**, or **$9.99 per month billed annually**. You can try it for 30 days, but there’s no permanent free tier. Markdown and CSV exports let you take your data elsewhere.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[13\]](https://stashr.me/blog/best-read-it-later-apps)

For a lighter, newsletter-first option, the next app is Matter.

## 3\. [Matter](https://hq.getmatter.com/)

### Saving content

Matter is an Apple-first reader for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It also supports the web, but there’s no native Android app. Save articles through browser extensions or the iOS share sheet. **Premium adds a dedicated newsletter email address and Gmail integration.** [\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)[\[8\]](https://www.burn451.cloud/blog/read-it-later-app)

### Reading and annotation

Matter keeps its reading view simple. You can highlight passages, while Premium adds text-to-speech and an AI Co-Reader for summaries and questions about documents. Offline reading works on iPhone and iPad. Code-block rendering is basic, so try a technical article before moving your reading queue. [\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[8\]](https://www.burn451.cloud/blog/read-it-later-app)

### Organization and integrations

Premium syncs highlights to Notion, Obsidian, and [Kindle](https://www.amazon.com/kindle). These connections are for moving highlights - not backing up your library. [\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)[\[8\]](https://www.burn451.cloud/blog/read-it-later-app)

### Pricing and exports

The core reader is free. On the web, paid plans cost **$8 per month or $60 per year**. Through the App Store, you’ll pay $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. [\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)

Matter lists no full-library export or public API. Highlight sync doesn’t fill that gap, making Matter a better fit for reading than owning a long-term archive. [\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)

If your reading list leans heavily on bookmarks and PDFs, Raindrop.io is next.

## 4\. [Raindrop.io](https://raindrop.io/)

### Saving content

Raindrop.io suits developers who want links, docs, and PDFs in one visual bookmark library. It has [browser extensions](https://daily.dev/blog/chrome-e-streamlining-your-workflow) and mobile apps. **Free saves links only.** Pro also saves page copies, so you can keep the content even if the source disappears. [\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[12\]](https://pithlab.app/best/read-it-later-alternatives)

### Reading and annotation

Raindrop.io works best as a browser-first reading library. Its built-in reader handles articles, and you can view PDFs inside the app. Basic highlighting is available; advanced highlighting and annotation require Pro. Offline reading isn’t its strong suit, so it’s better suited to a cloud bookmark library. [\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)

### Organization and integrations

Library management is the main draw - not deep reading features. You can sort bookmarks into nested collections, add tags, and switch between list, grid, and masonry views. Free search covers bookmark metadata; **Pro searches inside saved content.** A REST API lets you build custom workflows. [\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)[\[8\]](https://www.burn451.cloud/blog/read-it-later-app)[\[12\]](https://pithlab.app/best/read-it-later-alternatives)

### Pricing and exports

Free includes unlimited bookmarks and devices, nested collections, and tags. Pro adds full-text search, saved copies, backups, and broken-link detection. Check the [vendor’s pricing page](https://raindrop.io/pro) for current Pro pricing. You can export bookmarks in HTML and CSV, but these exports don’t preserve page content as Pro copies do. [\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[5\]](https://gleamr.io/blog/best-read-it-later-app-2026)[\[6\]](https://www.readless.app/blog/best-read-later-apps-comparison)

If you’d rather self-host than use a hosted bookmark library, the next option is [Wallabag](https://wallabag.org/).

## 5\. [Wallabag](https://wallabag.org/)

### Saving content

For Pocket refugees who want **control over their data**, Wallabag offers an open-source, self-hosted option. You can run it yourself or choose managed hosting at [wallabag.it](https://wallabag.it/).

Self-hosting works with [Docker](https://www.docker.com/), but you’re responsible for the app, database, updates, and backups. Managed hosting takes that server work off your plate. It’s a choice that appeals to developers who want to own their archive without necessarily managing a server. [\[4\]](https://www.bigiron.cc/guides/the-self-hosted-pocket-replacement-stack-2026)[\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)[\[14\]](https://wallabag.it/en/alternatives/)

### Reading and annotation

The reader supports highlights and annotations, plus offline sync through its iOS and Android apps. Article extraction can fail on paywalled pages or sites that rely heavily on JavaScript. [\[4\]](https://www.bigiron.cc/guides/the-self-hosted-pocket-replacement-stack-2026)[\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)[\[15\]](https://selfhostpicks.com/self-hosted-alternative-to-pocket/)

### Organization and integrations

Tags and full-text search help you organize your library and find saved content. Firefox and Chrome extensions, an API, and RSS import and export also support scripted workflows. **Ownership, rather than polish, is the main draw.** [\[4\]](https://www.bigiron.cc/guides/the-self-hosted-pocket-replacement-stack-2026)[\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)

### Pricing and exports

Self-hosting is free apart from hosting costs. Managed hosting at wallabag.it costs €11 per year, billed in euros.

You can export content as PDF, EPUB, MOBI, JSON, CSV, TXT, and HTML. That range of formats makes Wallabag a better fit for long-term ownership than for readers seeking a polished consumer experience. [\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[4\]](https://www.bigiron.cc/guides/the-self-hosted-pocket-replacement-stack-2026)[\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)

## 6\. [Zotero](https://www.zotero.org/)

### Saving content

Zotero is a better fit if most of your reading is academic. It’s a reference manager for research papers, RFCs, and technical docs.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[4\]](https://www.bigiron.cc/guides/the-self-hosted-pocket-replacement-stack-2026) Its [browser connector](https://www.zotero.org/download/connectors) detects supported papers and pages, then saves citation details - authors, publication date, and DOI or ISBN - along with a PDF or web snapshot.

### Reading and annotation

**PDF annotations and linked notes** help you reuse sources, rather than just save them. Zotero suits studying research papers and tracing findings back to their sources more than browsing a feed of saved posts.

### Organization and integrations

Use collections to group references by topic or project. Citation integrations help you cite those sources in your writing.

### Pricing and exports

Library management and citation sync are free. **File storage costs extra if you need a paid plan**, so syncing references doesn’t give you unlimited cloud storage for PDFs. Check Zotero’s [storage page](https://www.zotero.org/storage) for current rates.

Before settling on an export workflow, check whether your chosen format keeps references, notes, and attachments.

For [browser-native reading lists](https://daily.dev/blog/reading-list-chrome-enhance-your-professional-network), the next option is simpler.

## 7\. [Browser reading lists](https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/ibrw1011/mac)

Browser reading lists are a lightweight fallback for basic saving - no extra app needed.

### Saving content

Chrome and [Safari](https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/ibrw1011/mac) both have built-in reading lists. Chrome syncs saved links through your Google Account, while Safari uses [iCloud](https://www.icloud.com/) to sync across Apple devices.[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[13\]](https://stashr.me/blog/best-read-it-later-apps)

### Reading and annotation

Safari can save articles offline automatically. Chrome doesn’t reliably download the full page. **Reader mode can break code snippets, API examples, and indentation**, so check code blocks on the source page or use [code snippet managers](https://daily.dev/blog/7-best-code-snippet-managers-for-devs-2024) for better organization.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[13\]](https://stashr.me/blog/best-read-it-later-apps)

### Organization and integrations

Use these lists as a short reading queue, not a technical archive. They’re a poor fit for reference material you’ll need to search later.[\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)

### Pricing and exports

Both features are free, but moving your saved content elsewhere is difficult.[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)

The feature and export comparison below shows where that convenience comes at the cost of ownership.

## 8\. [daily.dev bookmarks](https://daily.dev/)

**daily.dev bookmarks suit a social, feed-based way to save technical articles.** The free core workflow lets you save posts, [GitHub](https://github.com/) trends, and project updates as you find them in your [personalized developer feed](https://daily.dev/blog/dailydev-a-global-dev-community-hub). Revisit saved items in the **Bookmarks** section. [\[16\]](https://daily.dev/posts/i-ditched-pocket-for-karakeep-and-my-research-library-finally-became-searchable-uumprntl5)

### Scope and limitations

[Discovery, saving, and discussion](https://daily.dev/blog/news-for-programmers-community-driven-insights) happen in one place, so there’s less switching between tools. But the focus stays on developer content - it’s not a general-purpose archive. It’s built for saving within your feed rather than long-term library management. [\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/)[\[16\]](https://daily.dev/posts/i-ditched-pocket-for-karakeep-and-my-research-library-finally-became-searchable-uumprntl5)

## Compare features, pricing, and exports

This comparison draws on the cited sources. **Check Zotero and browser reading lists before migrating**, since some details remain unverified. Test a code-heavy article, too - rendering varies by tool.

## Choose the right tool for your reading

Pick the app that fits how you read: [Instapaper](https://www.instapaper.com/) for finishing articles without fuss, [Readwise Reader](https://readwise.io/read) for research with annotations, or [Raindrop.io](https://raindrop.io/) for references organized by project. [\[1\]](https://textivore.com/blog/best-read-later-app-for-developers)[\[2\]](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/14/read-it-later-app-pocket-is-shutting-down-here-are-the-best-alternatives/)[\[11\]](https://clipgate.github.io/blog/pocket-alternatives-for-developers-2026/) Choose [Wallabag](https://wallabag.org/) for a self-hosted archive, or use your browser’s reading list for temporary saves.

**Before importing your Pocket export, test one code-heavy article.** Check that reading view preserves indentation and monospaced text, then try offline mode. Open a trial export, too, and confirm it contains full text, images, and annotations - not just links. ## FAQs

### Can I recover saved articles without an export?

**No. If you didn’t export your saved articles before the service deadlines, you can’t recover them.** Pocket disabled export and API access by November 12, 2025, and queued the remaining user data for permanent deletion. The hosted version of Omnivore closed in November 2024.

If you already have a local export file, you can import it into a compatible service to restore your saved links and metadata.

### How can I migrate without losing highlights?

Choose an app that **supports importing highlights and notes**, and check that it accepts your export format. Pocket deleted all user data on November 12, 2025, so you’ll need a previously downloaded export file to migrate your library.

After importing, check that your highlights transferred correctly. Make sure your export contains **content, not just links**. To protect your annotations, export your library regularly in a standard, machine-readable format such as JSON or Markdown.

### How do I back up my reading library?

Pick tools that export **article content, metadata, and tags** - not just URLs. Check for standard formats like JSON, CSV, or Markdown, plus API access so you can automate backups to your own infrastructure.

Export your library regularly. If you want more control, self-hosted tools let you manage your own server and backups. If you use a commercial service, consider keeping portable copies in knowledge management tools.
