Nvidia releases NOOA open-source framework for building AI agents as Python classes

<p>Nvidia released NOOA (Object-Oriented Agents), an open-source framework that collapses the usual agent scaffolding — prompt templates, tool schemas, callback code, workflow graphs — into one Python class.</p>
<p>The idea is straightforward: an agent is a Python object. Its methods are the actions the model can take, its fields hold state, its docstrings serve as prompts, and its type annotations act as enforced contracts. A method whose body is just <code>...</code> gets completed at runtime by a validated LLM loop. A method with a normal body runs as deterministic Python.</p>
<p>That single convention puts the boundary between probabilistic and deterministic behavior directly in the source code, which is a genuinely useful property. Agent behavior becomes testable, traceable, and refactorable with the same tools you’d use on any other Python codebase.</p>
<p>Nvidia also reports six model-facing ideas combined on one surface, including pass-by-reference over live objects and model-callable harness APIs for context and events. On SWE-bench Verified, NOOA reaches 82.2% with GPT-5.5 at roughly half the token cost of comparable harnesses. It was also evaluated on Terminal-Bench 2.0 and ARC-AGI-3.</p>
<p>For production use, Nvidia pairs NOOA with its OpenShell secure runtime and is contributing the project to the Open Secure AI Alliance.</p>
<p>The consolidation is a real improvement over fragmented approaches like LangGraph or AutoGen, though a few concerns are worth keeping in mind. Mixing deterministic and probabilistic code in the same class can make it harder to reason about what’s actually running at any given moment. And centralizing all agent logic in one place widens the blast radius if a prompt injection attack succeeds. The benchmark numbers are also worth treating with some caution before assuming they translate directly to regulated production systems.</p>

JetBrains open sources KotlinLLM plugin that saves LLM output as plain Kotlin

<p>JetBrains Research just open-sourced KotlinLLM, and the core idea is genuinely different from how most teams are using LLMs in production today.</p>
<p>The pitch: instead of calling an LLM on every request (slow, expensive, non-deterministic), or hiding AI usage inside agents nobody can audit, KotlinLLM generates real Kotlin source code the first time it hits a new scenario, saves it as a normal <code>.kt</code> file, and reuses it forever after. No model at runtime. No latency hit. Just code you can read, commit, and test.</p>
<p>The plugin introduces two APIs. <code>asLlm&lt;F,T&gt;()</code> converts unstructured input into typed Kotlin values. <code>mockLlm&lt;T&gt;()</code> generates stateful interface implementations. Both are explicit call sites in your codebase, which means they show up in code review like any other function call. That’s the point — JetBrains is betting that visibility is the thing most AI-in-production approaches get wrong.</p>
<p>The numbers from their Spring Petclinic Kotlin evaluation are decent: 100% hot-reload success across 24 scenarios, roughly 1% runtime overhead, and ~0.89 recall on a GitHub issue parser. Not production-hardened, but enough to show the concept isn’t purely theoretical.</p>
<p>The honest framing here matters: JetBrains is calling this a research prototype explicitly, and they’re asking for community feedback rather than claiming it’s ready to ship. That’s a refreshingly low-hype posture for a tool in this space.</p>
<p>What’s interesting is the problem it’s actually solving. The complaint about LLM-backed features in production usually comes down to three things: you can’t review what the model decided, you can’t test it reliably, and you’re paying inference costs on every request. KotlinLLM takes a swing at all three by treating generated code as an artifact rather than a live call.</p>
<p>Whether the tradeoff — generated code that might go stale as your app evolves — is worth it depends heavily on your use case. But as a research direction, it’s more interesting than another wrapper around the OpenAI API.</p>

mrmustard 0.7.4 PyPI package ships credential-stealing malware via compromised maintainer account

The mrmustard 0.7.4 PyPI package was found to contain credential-stealing malware injected by an attacker who compromised a maintainer's GitHub account. The attacker used the project's own CI to exfiltrate the PyPI publishing token, then uploaded a poisoned package that runs on every import. The payload collects SSH private keys, AWS credentials, Kubernetes configs, and HPC environment details, sending them to an attacker-controlled C2 server. It also installs three persistence mechanisms (cron job, Python .pth file, shell startup hook) that survive package removal. The attack specifically targeted quantum computing and HPC researchers. Indicators of compromise, recovery steps, and detection methods using StepSecurity Harden-Runner are provided.

Ruff v0.16.0 expands default rule set from 59 to 413 enabled rules

<p>Ruff v0.16.0 is out, and the most immediately noticeable change is a big expansion of the default rule set: from 59 enabled rules to 413. That’s a significant jump, and if you run it against an existing project, expect some surprises. Simon Willison ran it against sqlite-utils and got 1,618 flagged issues.</p>
<p>The new defaults focus on things that actually matter - syntax errors and runtime bugs rather than style nitpicks. So the noise-to-signal ratio should be reasonable, even if the initial count looks alarming.</p>
<h2>Other changes in this release</h2>
<p><strong>Markdown code block formatting.</strong> Ruff can now format Python code blocks embedded in Markdown files, which is useful if you maintain documentation with code examples.</p>
<p><strong>New suppression comment formats.</strong> You can now use <code>ruff: ignore</code> and <code>ruff: file-ignore</code> as alternatives to the existing comment syntax. In preview mode, these also support optional reason strings and rule names, so you can document why something is being suppressed.</p>
<p><strong>Inline diffs.</strong> Running <code>ruff check</code> or <code>ruff format --check</code> now shows diffs inline rather than separately, making it easier to see what would change.</p>

Python Software Foundation launches Python Packaging Council with first election opening July 28

<p>If you’ve ever rage-quit a Python project because pip, Poetry, uv, and conda all had different opinions about what “installed” means, this one’s for you.</p>
<p>The Python Software Foundation is launching the inaugural Python Packaging Council (PPC), and nominations open July 28th. The PPC will be the official technical decision-making body for Python packaging interoperability specs — the layer that’s supposed to make all those competing tools actually agree on something.</p>
<p>Five seats get filled in this first election. The top two vote-getters land two-year terms (Cohort A); the next three get one-year terms (Cohort B). It’s a staggered setup so the council doesn’t turn over all at once next year. Nominations close August 11th, voter affirmation deadline is August 25th, and voting runs September 1–15.</p>

Apache Airflow 3.3.0 adds stateful tasks and Java and Go task SDK

Apache Airflow 3.3.0 introduces four major features: a first-class Task & Asset State Store (AIP-103) that lets tasks persist key-value state across retries and reruns without XCom hacks; a Language Task SDK (AIP-108, experimental) enabling task logic written in Java or Go to run on standard Airflow workers alongside Python tasks with full XCom, Variable, and Connection access; expanded asset partitioning with new FanOutMapper, FixedKeyMapper, SegmentWindow, time windows, and wait policies; and pluggable retry policies (AIP-105) for custom retry strategies. Additional improvements include DAG result endpoints, bundle version control on clear/rerun/backfill, UI enhancements for state inspection and bulk actions, and breaking OpenTelemetry metrics changes from Gauges to Histograms.

PyTorch 2.13 ships with FlexAttention on Apple Silicon and 4x memory savings for LLM training

PyTorch 2.13 is released with 3,328 commits from 526 contributors. Key highlights include FlexAttention landing on Apple Silicon (MPS) with up to ~12x speedup over SDPA on sparse patterns, a new CuTeDSL 'Native DSL' backend for Inductor as an alternative to Triton for GEMM and RMSNorm, and nn.LinearCrossEntropyLoss that fuses linear projection and loss computation to cut peak GPU memory by up to 4x for large-vocabulary LM training. Distributed training gains the new torchcomms backend for improved fault tolerance and debuggability, plus FSDP2 now supports overlapping reduce-scatter and all-gather via separate process groups. Python 3.15 wheel support (including free-threaded 3.15t) is available on Linux. Platform updates include ROCm AOTriton 0.12b, Armv9-A torch.compile targeting, and Intel XPU device telemetry APIs. Breaking changes include removal of named tensors and the Bazel build system.
