1Password has acquired Israeli startup Apono for a reported $250m–$300m to expand from password management into runtime access governance. Apono's platform grants just-in-time, intent-based access to humans, machines, and AI agents — revoking permissions automatically when tasks complete. The deal targets the growing problem of non-human identities (AI agents) operating inside enterprise systems with no fine-grained access controls. Apono integrates with AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Snowflake, Databricks, and 200+ enterprise tools. 1Password also launched a new Credential Broker product in private beta, positioning itself as a unified control plane for all identity types. The move puts 1Password in direct competition with CyberArk, Wiz, and emerging startups in the AI-agent security space.
