R now supports variable fonts when rendering glyphs in graphics. The xdvir CRAN package has been updated to leverage this new capability for rendering LaTeX fragments. Variable fonts allow a single font file to contain multiple variations (weight, width, slant) that can be adjusted dynamically, providing more flexibility in typography for R graphics and visualizations.
