The ATI R300 Gallium3D open-source driver is undergoing a significant rework 24 years after the hardware launched. Independent contributor Pavel Ondračka has merged the first part of a major effort to remove TGSI (the original Gallium3D intermediate representation) and replace it with NIR, the modern IR used by all current Mesa drivers. The initial merge has landed for Mesa 26.2, though the full transition is not yet complete. Notably, ChatGPT's Codex was used to assist with the more mechanical search-and-replace patches in the process.
