# Linux 7.2-rc6 is unusually large, with driver quirks, security fixes, and an AMD CPU misidentification bug

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux 7.2-rc6 has landed with an unusually high commit count — 537 non-merge commits since rc5, making it potentially the largest rc6 by commit count in years. Driver fixes dominate at ~60%, with networking at ~20%. The sound subsystem pull was notably oversized, including device-specific quirks for hardware like Corsair Virtuoso and Lenovo Legion 7, plus security fixes for use-after-free vulnerabilities, stack leaks, race conditions, and out-of-bounds accesses — several of which were reportedly found by AI/LLM coding agents. A notable bug fixed: AMD Zen 5 CPUs were being misidentified as Zen 6 due to incorrect ID range assignments. Also included is a fix for x86 memcmp() instruction reordering that caused unbootable VMs under Xen, a workaround for buggy Western Digital SATA drives, and DRM graphics fixes. The stable 7.2 release is expected in roughly two weeks.

## Content

Linux 7.2-rc6 is out, and both Linus Torvalds and sound subsystem maintainer Takashi Iwai are a bit uncomfortable with how big it got.

Torvalds called it potentially the biggest rc6 by commit count in years — 537 non-merge commits since rc5. The breakdown is roughly what you'd expect late in a cycle: driver fixes account for about 60%, networking around 20%, with the rest spread across arch, tooling, and filesystems. He attributed some of the backlog to conference timing, which tends to compress patch submissions.

## Sound fixes that got out of hand

Iwai described the sound pull as "far larger than wished." It includes device-specific quirks for a fairly long list of hardware: Corsair Virtuoso, Razer Barracuda X 2.4, HP Victus 16, Lenovo Legion 7, and others — covering microphone problems, mute LED fixes, and audio not working at all on certain platforms.

Beyond the quirks, the pull also addresses several security issues: use-after-free vulnerabilities, stack leaks, potential race conditions, and out-of-bounds accesses. Iwai noted that a number of these were found by AI/LLM coding agents, which Torvalds also flagged as a noticeable trend in this cycle. Whether that's a good thing probably depends on how you feel about the overall patch volume.

Iwai said he plans to throttle sound patch activity as the cycle winds down.

## AMD Zen 5 CPUs misidentified as Zen 6

One of the more concrete bugs fixed in rc6: some AMD Zen 5 CPUs were being misidentified as Zen 6 due to an incorrect ID range assignment. The fix reserves 0xd0–0xd7 for Zen 5 and updates the Zen 6 ranges to 0xc0–0xcf, 0xd8–0xef, 0x50–0x5f, and 0x80–0xaf.

The same x86 fixes pull includes a correction to x86 `memcmp()` to prevent instruction reordering that was causing unbootable VMs under Xen.

## Other notable fixes

- A workaround for buggy Western Digital SATA drives
- DRM graphics driver fixes

## What's next

The stable Linux 7.2 release is expected in roughly two weeks. Torvalds expressed hope that things calm down before then — a sentiment Iwai clearly shares.
