# 30th Anniversary Expansion Pack

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 1 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A 30th anniversary expansion pack for Worms: The Director's Cut has been released, featuring 40+ levels, 50+ sample packs, 10 DIY terrains, and new teams. A remix album with nine new music pieces inspired by Bjørn Lynne's original Worms theme is also available. Additionally, an online tool called WormPrefs 2.0 lets players create custom dual-layer maps, mountain sets, terrains, and teams directly in the browser. The project was curated and produced by Andy Davidson and Ben Paddon.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 45 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-09-14).

**TL;DR:** The release triggers a wave of nostalgia, with people fondly recalling childhood hours spent on early Worms games and debating which version holds up best today, but there's little critical discussion of the anniversary pack itself.

**Sentiment:** 85% positive · 13% mixed · 2% skeptical

**The case for**

- Many recall the older games (especially Worms Armageddon and World Party) as having exceptional replay value and multiplayer fun.
- Some praise Worms Armageddon's continued community support and modern compatibility.
- The new remix album is called out as surprisingly good.

**The pushback**

- A few note that kids today don't connect with the older Worms games the way past generations did.
- Some feel the physics and terrain in later Worms titles are less enjoyable than the classic ones.
- No macOS support is a pain point for at least one person wanting to play with a team online.

**By community**

- hackernews (positive): Dominated by nostalgic reminiscing about childhood Worms sessions and friendly debate over which game in the series is best, with only minor gripes.

**Hottest debate:** Which Worms game is the best entry point or definitive version (Armageddon vs. WMD vs. World Party).

**Open questions**

- Will there be a way to play the classic games easily on macOS or with modern online matchmaking?

**Highlights**

> Anyone got any thoughts on which Worms I should be buying on Steam? Worms Armageddon is on there, which is the one I remember from my childhood. Or am I better off with Worms WMD?

> Played a lot of Worms Armageddon when I was a kid. WMD is the best one by far and carries Armageddon's spirit. The others lost the script trying to make cooler games.

> If you haven't played since childhood, this might not matter to you, but I never got on with the games from the 3rd generation (https://worms.fandom.com/wiki/Third_Generation) and beyond because the physics are different in a way I find less enjoyable. It's especially noticeable if you loved using the ninja rope in the older games. Worms Armageddon is the one to go with from the second generation. It has received a lot of care over the years, and with the latest updates it should run perfectly on a modern computer with a big high res monitor (or without, of course). I haven't played online for quite a while, but it seems to still have an active community: https://www.tus-wa.com/ edit: but I'm looking it up now, and apparently WMD has Armageddon-like physics, so maybe that really is the obvious choice! (I don't know if they're literally the same, or just pretty similar, but I guess you probably won't care about that.)

> I would not get my hopes very high, it's my favorite game to play with kids on PS3 (Worms Armageddon), but they don't seem to like it as much as me, they would rather play Sonic All Stars Racing, Rayman Legends, NHL or other games, they don't share my love for Atomic Bomberman either and it's not about old graphics, they really liked TMNT Turtles in Time or Sunset Riders on emulator

> Andy dedicates this release to his mum and dad. https://shows.acast.com/63b458521043e00011114396/episodes/69... > Mum used to tell me a story about when I first saw the Amiga. I was about 12 years old and she said my face 'lit up' in a way that she'd never seen before. And then she went straight back to dad and said "We're going to have to work extra shifts, so we can get an Amiga", and that wasn't possible for about a couple of years until the Amiga 500 came out. I'm doing an update to Worms DC at the moment and I'm gonna dedicate that to my mum and dad because, without them, without them getting me that computer, I don't know which direction I would've gone in. Hopefully your parents also encouraged you to live your dreams, and sacrificed to get you the computer(s) you always wanted. And if you are parents now, I hope you'll do the same for your children.
