# 37% of IT Security Teams Hit Burnout From Audit Demands

**[Huntress Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/huntress-blog)** · 7 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A Huntress-commissioned survey of 504 U.S. IT and security leaders (companies with 100+ employees, fielded May 12, 2026) finds a gap between perceived and actual audit readiness. While 91% treat compliance documentation as ongoing and 70% feel very confident they'd pass an audit tomorrow, only 22% say they'd need zero prep time, and 78% of those who claimed readiness still need days to weeks to prepare. Over the past year, compliance demands caused burnout or turnover at 37% of organizations, delayed security initiatives at 34%, and cost 21% a contract or business opportunity. Manual evidence collection correlates with longer prep windows: 64% of mostly-manual teams need two or more weeks versus lower rates among automated teams. Changing compliance requirements (23%) is cited as the top barrier to continuous audit readiness, ahead of staffing and tooling gaps. 88% of respondents are using or evaluating tools for continuous compliance evidence collection.

## Questions this post answers

### What percentage of security teams experience burnout from compliance audit demands?

37% of IT and security professionals report that compliance and audit demands led to security team burnout or staff turnover over a recent 12-month period, based on a survey of 504 U.S. IT and security leaders at companies with more than 100 employees. Another 37% hired additional staff specifically to handle compliance work, and 34% delayed active security initiatives to keep up with documentation demands.

### How much prep time do IT teams actually need before a security audit even when they feel ready?

Among IT and security leaders who said their documentation and evidence were ready to go, 78% still needed at least a few days of prep time, and for nearly half of that group the window stretched to a week or more. Only 22% overall said they would need no additional prep time, despite 70% claiming to be very confident about passing an audit immediately.

### Does manual evidence collection make audits take longer than automated methods?

Yes, teams relying mostly or fully on manual evidence collection need substantially more prep time before an audit. 64% of manual-heavy teams need at least two weeks to feel audit-ready, compared to teams using automation, where 22% say they need no prep time at all versus only 15% among manual-heavy teams.
