Testing containerd 1.7.36, 2.3.6, and 2.4.1 against the same node data found the upgrade gentler than the changelog implies: old version-2 configs still load (migrated in memory with a warning), and deprecated inline registry mirrors still work despite a removal deadline that has slipped from v2.1 to v2.7. The real break is schema 1 image pulls, which fail outright on 2.x with 'schema 1 image manifests are no longer supported.' Because already-cached images stay in the image store after upgrade, the failure doesn't appear on the upgraded node itself but later, when a fresh node, a garbage-collected image, or imagePullPolicy: Always forces a new pull.
