The trick is to find something you genuinely enjoy in a world that’s constantly trying to hook you on the next quick dopamine hit. I pity this generation, finding the signal for all the noise must be horrendous. Back in my day (yes! I finally get to say that!), information and exploration and knowledge was harder to get, and you had to work at it, and maybe that’s the key thing that’s missing these days, struggle. Struggle gives you purpose and is a quick way to discover things you enjoy, because if you do something, and struggle at it, and find yourself drawn to doing more of it, then maybe that is something you genuinely enjoy?

I’m a 50+ software dev, and I can tell you that at this phase of my career, I’m more valuable as a mentor and as someone who asks better questions. I’ve got a head full of old-school awesomeness, and when the chips are down, I’m the person they call because I frequently just have some trick up my sleeve. When a new design or pattern is being planned at work, I’m the person they call to see if it holds water. These younger engineers are amazing. They are far and away better coders than we were when we entered the workforce. And, anyone who tells you that some younger coder is hard to work with what I usually am hearing is “I don’t see explaining myself as part of my job.” You are a senior engineer; you exist because of all of your experience. Offer it. You want to see better engineers around you? Lead by example. Be willing to teach what you know. Show why you chose a path over capriciously declaring it. Ask better questions, offer better answers.

Happy to know about the author. He has really good articles worth reading, which are surprisingly for a professor very down-to-earth and easy to read and understand.
