# How to Use AI to Learn Faster

**[Engineering Leadership](https://daily.dev/sources/engineeringleadership)** · [@gregorojstersek](https://daily.dev/gregorojstersek) · 80 upvotes · 3 comments

## Summary

Engineers using AI fall into three camps: refusers who distrust it, overreliers who stop thinking critically, and multipliers who use AI to amplify their judgment. The piece offers concrete workflows for using AI to onboard into unfamiliar codebases (via Claude Code's /init, architecture mapping, testing strategy discovery, and setup checklists), to learn new languages/frameworks by mapping concepts from a known language, to build hands-on learning projects instead of watching tutorials, and to use AI as a thinking partner for stress-testing specs, rehearsing hard conversations, and refining writing. Includes several ready-to-use prompts and is adapted from an upcoming O'Reilly book, with a CodeRabbit Security sponsorship segment at the top.

> Great article! Some of the points here I am already doing but some are something new to me and will definitely apply it in my workflow. This is the balance every engineer should strive for.

> Great read. Really liked the point about asking why the code works and building one part at a time. Easy to skip that when AI can generate the whole thing, but that’s where the learning happens
