A developer called Rompass has created a BIOS-like firmware subsystem for the ESP32-C6 microcontroller. Unlike a traditional PC BIOS, this system provides a bootloader and API layer that supports dynamically loaded executables from RAM, which can also be loaded over the network. The project highlights the blurring boundary between microcontrollers and microprocessors, a trend expected to continue as more capable application processors like the ESP32-P4 enter the mainstream.
