# A BIOS update silently killed my RAM performance, and I didn't notice for two years

## Summary

A BIOS update performed before swapping to an AMD Ryzen 5800X3D silently reset the DOCP/XMP memory profile, causing RAM to run at 2133MT/s instead of the rated 3600MT/s for nearly two years. The performance loss went unnoticed largely because X3D CPUs rely heavily on their large L3 cache and are far less sensitive to memory speeds than standard Ryzen chips. The issue was only discovered by checking Task Manager and noticing the RAM speed. Re-enabling the DOCP profile immediately improved frame times, 1% lows, and reduced microstutters. The key takeaway: always verify BIOS settings — especially XMP/EXPO, PBO, and Resizable BAR — after any BIOS update or CPU swap.
