A hardware maker built a clock inspired by failed clock-drawing cognitive tests (CDT), which are used to screen for dementia. The clock face intentionally mimics a disordered CDT result, with numerals clustered on the right half and out of order. It uses an ESP32-C3 microcontroller, a DS3231 RTC module, and a servo motor for the hour hand, all housed in a 3D-printed frame. Power efficiency was a key design goal: a MOSFET disconnects the servo except for hourly updates, Wi-Fi syncs to NTP only once a month, and indicator LEDs are disabled, resulting in ~160 µA idle draw and roughly one year of life from three AA NiMH cells.
