Workshop Description

This workshop takes participants on a guided and practical journey through modern C++, starting from the absolute basics including classes and fundamental OOP design, and progressing toward real world examples and development practices. Through live coding and hands-on exercises, we will explore essential language concepts, focusing on code clarity, correctness, and modern best practices.

We will touch on the evolution of the language from C++11 to C++23, showing how new features enhance expressiveness, safety, and performance while keeping in mind what remains relevant for anyone still maintaining C++98 code.

Along the way, we will bridge the gaps for all participants with examples covering RAII, smart pointers and resource management, move semantics, STL data structures and algorithms, lambda expressions, templates, constexpr programming, and modular design principles. We will also discuss readability, API design, and how to avoid common pitfalls that even experienced C++ developers still face.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding not only of how to write C++ code, but also of why things are done the way they are in modern software systems. No prior experience beyond basic C++ knowledge is required. We will, however, revisit the fundamentals quickly in order to move on to more advanced techniques and examples.

Amir Kirsh is a C++ lecturer at the Academic College of Tel-Aviv-Yaffo and Tel-Aviv University, previously the Chief Programmer at Comverse, after being CTO and VP R&D at a startup acquired by Comverse. He is also a co-organizer of the annual Core C++ conference and a consultant and trainer for C++ and SW development in general.
