A CCC Community Chat webinar explored the convergence of citizen science and advanced computing, presenting findings from a workshop report on grand challenges in the field. Key themes included the mutual reinforcement between AI/ML and citizen science, the importance of human-machine teaming, feedback loops for volunteer engagement, trust and transparency in algorithmic systems, outdated infrastructure as a bottleneck, and rising security threats like data poisoning. A ten-year research roadmap was outlined with five drivers: human-machine teaming, feedback and interactivity, trust and governance, security and privacy, and future infrastructure. Lightning talks highlighted ecological datasets as major ML benchmarks and NASA citizen scientists building their own AI tools.
