# A New Route to Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computers

**[Embedded.com](https://daily.dev/sources/embedded-com)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

ETH Zurich researchers have developed a technique using a single trapped ion as a high-sensitivity 3D probe to map electric and magnetic fields near quantum chip surfaces. Built on a Penning trap architecture, the system can detect electric fields as low as 10 nV/m within one second of measurement time, scanning areas 50–450 micrometers above the chip. This diagnostic tool helps identify sources of electromagnetic noise — such as surface contamination, fabrication defects, and material interfaces — that cause qubit decoherence. While developed for trapped-ion systems, the methodology applies broadly to superconducting qubits, spin qubits, and quantum sensors, offering a pathway to lower-noise quantum chips and more scalable, fault-tolerant quantum hardware.
