# A new year's present: introducing Glimpse plugins for Windows Azure

**[Maarten Balliauw](https://daily.dev/sources/maartenballiauw)** · 6 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new public preview introduces two Glimpse plugins for Windows Azure: Glimpse.WindowsAzure, which displays runtime environment information for Cloud Services and Windows Azure Web Sites, and Glimpse.WindowsAzure.Storage, which tracks storage traffic, estimates costs, and warns about inefficient storage queries. Both packages are available as prerelease NuGet packages with source on GitHub. A current limitation in the Windows Azure Storage SDK requires manually passing a special OperationContext to every storage call to enable tracking, though the team says Microsoft is working on addressing this. Future plans include support for load-balanced environments and extending coverage to Windows Azure Caching and Service Bus.

## Questions this post answers

### Is there a Glimpse plugin for inspecting Windows Azure Storage calls?

Yes, the Glimpse.WindowsAzure.Storage package adds an Azure Storage tab to Glimpse showing all traffic to and from Windows Azure storage, including number of transactions, estimated cost per 10,000 pageviews, warnings about unindexed table storage queries, Nagle algorithm and HTTP 100 Continue settings, and a timeline of requests with status codes and durations.

### Why do I have to pass an OperationContext parameter to every Windows Azure Storage call when using Glimpse?

Because of a limitation in the Windows Azure Storage SDK, Glimpse requires a special OperationContext obtained from OperationContextFactory.Current.Create() passed explicitly to each storage call, such as container1.CreateIfNotExists(operationContext: OperationContextFactory.Current.Create()), so Glimpse can capture request information for its Azure Storage tab. The team was discussing a fix for this with Microsoft.

_Anyone wiring up Azure Storage diagnostics can follow fixes to this kind of SDK quirk on daily.dev._
