# A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over

**[Lobsters](https://daily.dev/sources/lobsters)** · 5 min read · 15 upvotes · 6 comments

## Summary

An opinionated career guide for front-end developers argues that amid industry turmoil (largely attributed to AI disruption), developers should double down on accessibility, deep CSS mastery, and communication skills, while actively rejecting far-right political influence creeping into tech. It also advises abandoning React as a legacy cargo-cult framework, moving off GitHub to self-hosted git forges like Forgejo, and tuning out tech influencers. The piece blends career advice with political commentary, naming specific figures and companies accused of enabling fascism in the industry.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 2 discussions and 247 comments across hackernews, lobsters (as of 2026-10-07).

**TL;DR:** Most pushback centers on the claim that AI hype will 'blow over' (seen as copium by many) and the advice to abandon React (seen as impractical given its dominance), while the political/anti-fascism framing sparks a separate, heated side debate.

**Sentiment:** 15% positive · 35% mixed · 50% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some agree learning React today is a poor use of time and that fundamentals or lighter alternatives like Svelte or vanilla JS/Web Components are more rewarding.
- A few found the piece less defensive than the reactions to it and credited it with identifying real industry problems like shoddy corporate UI/UX.
- Some share the author's underlying moral discomfort with AI and see value in pushing back against datacenter buildouts, pollution, and devaluation of creative work even if they keep using the tools.

**The pushback**

- Many argue the 'this will blow over' premise is denial/copium, comparing it unfavorably to genuine productivity gains from LLMs rather than past bubbles like crypto or the metaverse.
- Many say React is still completely dominant in job listings and real-world codebases, making the advice to avoid it impractical for career purposes.
- Several feel the political commentary and call to 'reject fascism' is vague, risky advice that could itself jeopardize job prospects, and object to specific accusations (e.g., against DHH) as unconvincing name-calling.
- Some see the overall advice as an incoherent grab-bag that doesn't cohere into an actionable strategy.

**By community**

- hackernews (heated): Dominated by a long argument over whether AI disruption is a temporary hype cycle or permanent transformation, plus a separate heated flare-up over the post's accusations against DHH and politics in tech.
- lobsters (mixed): Split between people defending React's continued dominance/utility and others sympathetic to moving past it, with skepticism toward both the 'blows over' framing and the anti-fascism call.

**Hottest debate:** Whether AI-driven disruption is a temporary hype bubble like crypto/NFTs that will fade, or a permanent, irreversible transformation of software work.

**Open questions**

- What exactly does 'when all this blows over' mean, and what would that endpoint look like?
- If React is abandoned, what should developers actually learn instead for job viability?
- How can someone practically 'reject fascism' in the industry without risking their livelihood?

**Highlights**

> I've lived through all of them. This is, dare I say it, cope. In some ways I fervently wish it were true - perhaps there will still be some kind of Engineering roles (right now we're enjoying a glut via Jevon's paradox) but the point of the singularity is we can't predict what's going to happen. What's _not_ going to happen is what's desired by this article which can basically be condensed into 3 bullet points to be appended to your initial spec to Opus 5.5. I don't want to see this person's dreams crushed, but _log linear charts keep going up and to the right_. I also don't think we're entitled to the high status and pay jobs we currently have 'by right'. We've been useful - we've been _very_ useful and we've done very well for ourselves. We've been the shovels in the gold rush. Now we have to hope we can adapt and that we still provide value commensurate to our pay. I didn't become a software engineer for the money - I just happened to one day have my hobby become a lucrative career, so perhaps my viewpoint is a little different. All the stuff that is important to the author is still stuff they can do, they just probably won't receive the status and remuneration they think they're entitled to.

> Dude is overdosing on copium "When all this blows over" you will still have open source models that are at least as capable as right now, probably more.

> Reject fascism and don’t learn React for a sustainable web career for when “all this blows over?” I’m (genuinely) so jealous of the amount and quality of delusion in this post, and wish anyone following this mindset the best of luck. I hope I’m wrong.

> > What do people use for frontend these days then? React. https://survey.stackoverflow.co/2025/technology. There's a narrative that web technologies turn over ever two days, but React is 13 years old. It is boring technology. I am not going to argue whether it is good or bad. I'm not even going to argue it's good for your career, I don't know the front-end market well enough to say which positions pay best. What I will stamp my foot and insist upon is that it is at worst, just slightly more dead than Python and Java. The amount of articles a tool gets on link aggregators is so badly correlated to its actual popularity.

> > If you want to avoid being pushed away from this industry, recognise and reject fascism before it comes for you. Don’t stay silent. I do not understand this bit. I understand the moral reasons for rejecting fascism, but on its face the above sentence is not logical. If the tech industry is so steeped in fascism, rejecting fascism might actually cause you to get pushed away. As a comparison: in the war, members of the resistance often met with a violent end. So yes, reject and resist fascism, but also know that this might seriously limit your job opportunities, and you might get kicked out of your current job (depending on who you work for). Just see how many people are having trouble finding a job if they've rejected (or simply not used) the fashtech of the day, LLMs.

> React is literally one of the most AI-understood things ever. Right now, after a short moment where it was falling down, it's getting used again due to it. Even in its worst moment, its share was far higher than Angular's, Vue's and Astro's, even all together (look at w3techs or google "react usage stats"and repeat for any framework).

> Leaving the politics aside, the core advice holds up well: deep CSS, accessibility and clear communication are skills that stay valuable no matter which framework or tool is popular next year.
