Energy storage startup Base Power has expanded into Illinois, marking its entry into PJM Interconnection territory — the largest U.S. grid operator, which has struggled with surging electricity demand from data centers. Base Power deploys large residential battery systems (starting at 25 kWh) and sells electricity to homeowners at rates 25% below utility ComEd's. By placing batteries behind the meter at homes, the company bypasses PJM's notoriously slow interconnection queue. The startup currently operates over 500 MWh of storage in Texas and has raised over $1.2 billion in funding, including backing from a16z and Addition.
