# Accelerating HTTP Web Servers With In-Kernel eBPF Deliver Up To 4.5x Throughput

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Researchers from ETH Zurich, NYU and NVIDIA built Beeper, a project that parses application-layer (L7) protocols using eBPF. An HTTP parser implemented in Beeper with an in-kernel HTTP cache improved web server throughput by up to 3x at high request rates. The project was presented this month at the Linux Plumbers Conference, with a 3.4x throughput improvement demonstrated. Separately, hyper-fast-path, an eBPF-based fast path for the Hyper Rust HTTP library, showed up to 4.5x maximum throughput. Beeper's code is written in Rust and available on GitHub.

## Questions this post answers

### What is Beeper and how does it use eBPF to speed up HTTP servers?

Beeper is an open-source research project from ETH Zurich, NYU and NVIDIA researchers that implements application-layer (L7) protocol parsing directly inside the Linux kernel using eBPF. With an HTTP parser and in-kernel HTTP cache, it improved web server throughput by up to 3x at high request rates, and the code is written in Rust and hosted on GitHub.

_Developers evaluating eBPF for networking performance can follow such research on daily.dev._

### How much throughput improvement does the hyper-fast-path eBPF project show for Rust's Hyper HTTP library?

The hyper-fast-path project, an eBPF-based fast path for the Hyper Rust HTTP library, demonstrated up to 4.5x maximum throughput improvement. It complements the Beeper research, which separately showed a 3.4x throughput gain from in-kernel eBPF application-layer parsing, both presented at the Linux Plumbers Conference.

_Those weighing Rust HTTP stack performance options can track projects like this on daily.dev._
