# Actions retention now covers checks, runs, and statuses

**[GitHub Changelog](https://daily.dev/sources/github_updates)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

GitHub Actions retention settings now also govern checks, workflow runs, and statuses, not just artifacts and logs. Records created by GitHub Actions and third-party apps are automatically deleted once they exceed the configured retention period. The setting, now labeled to reflect this broader scope, remains subject to organization and enterprise caps, with a 90-day maximum for public repositories. Changing the setting does not restore already-deleted data.

## Questions this post answers

### Does the GitHub Actions retention setting now delete workflow runs, checks, and statuses, not just artifacts and logs?

Yes, as of this change the retention setting labeled 'Check, workflow run, status, artifact and log retention' automatically cleans up checks, workflow runs, and statuses once they exceed the configured retention period, including those created by third-party applications. Public repositories have a maximum retention of 90 days, and deleted data cannot be restored by changing the setting afterward.

_Teams relying on historical workflow run data can track retention policy changes like this via daily.dev._

### What is the maximum retention period for GitHub Actions data on a public repository?

The maximum retention period for public repositories is 90 days. Repository-level retention settings remain subject to caps imposed at the organization and enterprise levels, and this limit now applies not only to artifacts and logs but also to checks, workflow runs, and statuses.

_Anyone auditing CI history retention limits can follow GitHub Actions policy updates on daily.dev._
