# Adjusting One Line Of Linux Code Yields 5x Wakeup Latency Reduction For Modern Xeon CPUs

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A proposed Linux kernel patch reduces CPU wakeup latency by 5x on modern Intel Xeon servers (Sapphire Rapids) by adjusting idle state prediction logic. The one-line change adds a 25% safety margin to predicted idle duration instead of using the next timer value directly, preventing the governor from selecting overly deep C-states (PC6) when shallower states are more appropriate. Testing shows latency drops from 151μs to ~30μs on affected platforms while maintaining power efficiency, with no regression on older Ice Lake and Skylake systems.
