# Admin dropped the F-bomb in a password to show hackers who was really 1337

**[The Register](https://daily.dev/sources/theregister)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A penetration tester gained full domain admin control at a factory by exploiting an unpatched Windows 7 server still connected to the network. Dahvid Schloss of Suzu Labs found the server linked to CNC milling machines was vulnerable to EternalBlue. Dumping LSASS revealed WDigest credentials, including an admin password reading 'heyhackergofyourself' in leet speak. He assumed it was a decoy and sat on it for a week, but it turned out to be the real admin password of the senior IT manager. The real weakness was the outdated, unpatched machine, not the password itself.

## Questions this post answers

### what is the EternalBlue exploit and why is it still dangerous on Windows 7 systems

EternalBlue is a Windows SMB vulnerability that lets attackers gain remote access to unpatched machines. A penetration tester used it against a Windows 7 server still connected to a factory domain and linked to CNC milling machines, dumping LSASS credentials and ultimately gaining complete control of the network, showing the exploit remains effective wherever legacy, unpatched systems stay connected.

### can a strong password protect an unpatched legacy server from exploits like EternalBlue

No, a strong password does not protect against exploits like EternalBlue because the vulnerability targets the operating system itself, not login credentials. In one case an admin's password was a leetspeak insult aimed at hackers, and it was a genuinely strong password, yet the outdated, unpatched Windows 7 machine was what let a penetration tester gain full domain control.
