Researchers at EeroQ, in collaboration with Michigan State University, have made a significant breakthrough in quantum computing by demonstrating control over individual electrons trapped on the surface of superfluid helium at temperatures above 1 Kelvin. This development is over 100 times warmer than the extreme conditions needed by existing quantum computers, which typically require cooling to around 10 millikelvin.
The innovative approach harnesses superconducting microwave circuits to control electrons that float due to an image charge effect in the dielectric helium, allowing them to remain bound without chemical interaction. This technology, which operates effectively at temperatures of up to 4 Kelvin, challenges the conventional need for ultra-cold dilution refrigerators traditionally used in the field, thereby significantly reducing cooling requirements and offering a more scalable solution for quantum processors.
The electrons-on-helium method not only enhances scalability but also promises to simplify operations with higher cooling power, potentially integrating with existing CMOS infrastructure. The breakthrough validates long-standing theoretical predictions about the capabilities of exceptionally pure, long-lived qubits, positioning this approach as a practical alternative in the competitive quantum computing landscape.
