On the plus side, it was Microsoft's first fully 32-bit OS, offered real pre-emptive multitasking, improved security, the new NTFS filesystem, and was designed to be portable across multiple CPU architectures including MIPS, DEC Alpha, and later ARM and AMD64. On the downside, it required 16 MB of RAM at a time when 4 MB was standard (adding ~$600 to the cost), had poor hardware driver support, lacked Plug and Play, and had no power management. Despite limited adoption at launch, NT 3.1 proved foundational — every Microsoft OS from Windows XP onward is its direct descendant, and it helped sustain Intel's x86 market share by making capable computing affordable. ## Full article daily.dev links to this article rather than hosting it.
