# Agentic Tip #6: Use Fable as an architect

**[Agentic Engineering](https://daily.dev/sources/agentic)** · [@idoshamun](https://daily.dev/idoshamun) · 1 min read · 88 upvotes · 38 comments

## Summary

A practical tip for managing AI coding costs: instead of using expensive models like Fable for code generation, use them as an architect or reviewer to create plans, then let cheaper models like GPT or Opus handle the actual implementation. The analogy is a staff engineer guiding a junior developer — the expensive model sets the direction, the cheaper one executes.

## Content

Fable is expensive as hell. Sure, you can use it to write code, but you'll probably go broke doing it. What I suggest instead: have it write the plan, or review the implementation of a cheaper model like GPT or Opus. Think of how an architect or a staff engineer helps a junior write the plan before they go execute it. Once the plan is set, execution is the easy part.

> The price is mostly output tokens and sometimes a plan file consumes more tokens than actual code changes so keep it in mind. It all depends on the amount & complexity of the desired code changes. if the code is in a very "sensitive" area of high complexity, I would want the best AI to write/edit it, otherwise cheaper AIs are as capable

> I started using Fable 5 for planning and to make the architecture designs needed. Then I switch to a cheaper model like Sonnet 5 for the build and testing. Then I go back to Fable to do the code review. I don't know if this is the best way to do it but this is what I started in the past couple of weeks

> How do you use it? Do you ask it to talk to codex as well? Will be great if you can point to an example.
