AI humanisers and autotypers are now reliably defeating academic plagiarism detectors, with some vendors selling both the evasion tools and the detection tools. University of Florida research found false-negative rates as high as 99.6% in the top five AI text detectors, and false positives disproportionately flag non-native English speakers. Institutions are responding with everything from oral exams to internet shutdowns. The deeper argument is that the detection arms race is a dead end — the real problem is that grades became a proxy for learning long before AI arrived, and AI is simply the most efficient optimizer yet for gaming that proxy.
