# AI is cutting older workers' careers short, study finds

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 5 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

New research from Boston College's Center for Retirement Research finds that workers aged 55+ in AI-exposed occupations are leaving employment at significantly higher rates since ChatGPT launched in November 2022. Critically, they're landing in unemployment rather than retirement. Computer programmers saw exit rates rise over 25% and accountants about 22%. The study pairs US Current Population Survey data with a Tufts University AI exposure index. Unlike previous automation waves, this one hits educated, well-paid workers first. Only 18% of workers aged 50-64 use generative AI, far below younger cohorts. The researcher cautions these are early findings, but the pattern suggests AI is narrowing the career-length advantage that desk jobs once provided over physical labor.
