# AI lacks theory of mind – why that matters

**[SD Times](https://daily.dev/sources/sdtimes)** · 4 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Large language models lack theory of mind, the human ability to predict what others know and think. This limitation means LLMs cannot distinguish between their own knowledge and what users know, struggle to understand user perspectives, and fail at reasoning about knowledge states across conversations. While LLMs excel at syntax, they have no semantic grounding or framework for modeling awareness and ignorance, which fundamentally limits their ability to collaborate and understand context the way humans do.
