As 6G standards take shape ahead of a 2029 rollout, the telecom industry is debating how deeply AI should be embedded in radio access networks (RANs). Nvidia's $1 billion investment in Nokia signals a push to make 6G hardware resemble GPU-powered AI servers, and Nokia, Ericsson, and Huawei are all running AI-RAN trials. However, industry analysts and operators are skeptical: wireless networks are already near theoretical efficiency limits, existing software solutions deliver similar gains without new hardware, and proof-of-concept trials haven't proven that AI needs to be deeply integrated into the RAN's core architecture. The more credible emerging view is a hierarchical architecture — tiny ML models at the tower for real-time decisions, more capable models at edge sites, and large foundation models in regional data centers — rather than turning every cell tower into an AI data center. The key 3GPP standards meeting in Madrid in September 2026 will set the direction.
