GNOME's extensions portal (EGO) has been overwhelmed by AI-generated submissions despite a December 2025 rule explicitly banning them. Reviewer Javad Rahmatzadeh took a new approach: writing best-practice guidelines aimed directly at AI models. The guidance covers proper cleanup in destroy() methods, avoiding unnecessary error handling and boolean guard flags, targeting a single GNOME Shell version instead of many, splitting logic across files, and avoiding placeholder code. AI-generated extensions intended for personal use must also include a comment warning against uploading to EGO unless the developer understands and can maintain the code.
