A math professor reflects on Google's AI solving four out of six International Math Olympiad problems last year — a feat the professor admits surpasses their own ability. The problems are designed to be highly original, yet AI managed to find solutions. The professor muses that AI creativity may now exceed human capability, with the only remaining uniquely human trait being that we care about human existence.

saying something is original depends on your definition of original, I did doubt it, I don’t mean it in an offensive way but I don’t believe we as humans are capable of being that original we are very good at pattern recognition and can’t possibly create everything purely original.

That was an interesting thing up until now I have not known a single incident where AI came up with its own creative answer rather than generating what it was fed.

It depends how you define creativity. If its simply applying existing related things in a different way, then maybe. My definition of creativity is a bit broader: as a bare minimum its the ability to apply seemingly unrelated concepts to solve a problem at hand, leading to creating something new in the current field. By instinct or that “gut feeling”.
So please… AI is anything but creative in this regard. A creative solution is, for instance, using ant behaviour to create a new class of path finding and optimisation algorithms (as it was in the 90s… or maybe the 80s? it’s irrelevant at this point). AI cannot do that, because once it receives an IT-focused problem, it will look for an IT-focused solution (unless you specifically ask it to include another field of study - but then you’re the creative one, not the AI). It will never think about trying to apply behaviour of ants to optimise a path-finding algorithm. It will never think of applying solutions from an unrelated field on instinct or because it “feels” the similarities. AI doesn’t have those. And that is its biggest shortcoming.
Any problem that AI allegedly solved before humans had all the building blocks already available. Maths being the worst possible example, as most problems is just applying the right (and existing) transformations of the formulae and calculating it. The only thing AI brought to the table was speed - it applied what we know at a rate far faster than any human could, but still - it used the same building blocks we already know. It was only a matter of time before a human would solve those as well.
IMO, there’s no creativity involved here, just reasoning based on existing knowledge in a single field of study. It was also humans who designed the problems, not AI. And how? They applied what they knew in a single field, so again: not very creative (making sure a similar problem doesn’t exist is not creativity). 😉 One could even argue it’s that kind of situation where AI will always beat a human thanks to it’s speed.
