# AI Tools Won't Replace You — But They Will Change How You Code Today

## Summary

A practical rundown of habits for using AI tools effectively in daily development work, based on hands-on experience rather than hype. Key tips include using AI as a pre-PR code reviewer to catch obvious issues, using it to trace and explain unfamiliar code (with verification on sensitive areas like auth or payments), treating generated code as a first draft rather than something to merge directly, writing specific ticket-style prompts instead of vague requests, and offloading boilerplate work like test scaffolding and DTOs so more attention goes to architecture and edge cases.

## Content

I've spent the last few months actually trying to use AI tools inside my day-to-day work instead of just reading about them. Some of it changed how I code. Most of the hype didn't. Here's what actually held up.

- **Stop asking for code. Ask for a second opinion.**

The biggest shift for me wasn't using AI to write code — it was using it to review code before I even open a PR. Paste your diff and ask "what would a strict reviewer flag here?" before a human ever sees it. You'll catch the obvious stuff (unhandled nulls, missing error boundaries, an any you forgot to type) before it becomes a comment thread.

- **Use it to read code, not just generate it**

Dropping into a legacy module or someone else's NestJS service? Ask the AI to trace the data flow for you: "what does this function actually do end to end, including side effects." It's faster than stepping through it line by line, especially in a codebase you didn't write. Just verify — don't trust the summary blindly on anything touching auth, payments, or data writes.

- **Treat generated code as a first draft, not a merge**

The failure mode I see most often: copy-pasting AI output straight into a PR. It usually works, but it rarely matches your codebase's actual patterns — naming conventions, error handling style, how you structure services vs controllers. Use it to get unstuck or scaffold boilerplate, then rewrite it in your own hand. The 80% draft is the value; the last 20% is still yours.

- **Prompt like you're writing a ticket, not a Google search**

"Fix this bug" gets you a guess. "Here's the function, here's the expected input/output, here's the error I'm getting" gets you a diagnosis. The quality gap between a vague prompt and a specific one is enormous — treat the AI like a teammate who has zero context on your project until you give it some.

- **Let it write the boring stuff so you can think about the hard stuff**

Test scaffolding, repetitive DTOs, migration boilerplate, README drafts — this is where AI tools save real time with almost no risk. Save your own attention for the architecture decisions, the tricky edge cases, and the parts of the system where a wrong guess actually costs something.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

None of this makes you a worse engineer for using it — it just moves where your effort goes. Less time typing boilerplate, more time on the decisions that actually need a human.

What's your one AI-in-the-workflow habit that actually stuck?
