Akamai Technologies disclosed a $1.8 billion, seven-year cloud infrastructure deal with Anthropic, its largest contract ever, sending the stock up 27% in a single day. The deal validates Akamai's pivot from its legacy CDN business toward AI cloud infrastructure. Anthropic is buying distributed compute capacity from multiple providers as demand for Claude outpaces supply, and Akamai's edge network offers low-latency inference capabilities that centralized hyperscale data centers cannot match. Cloud infrastructure revenue grew 40% YoY to $95M in Q1, though it still represents less than 9% of total revenue.
