# AlloyDB courts AI agents, Postgres 19 Beta 4 nears GA

**[Databases Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/databases_digest)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Google Cloud pushed AlloyDB into agent territory with sandboxed, scale-to-zero Postgres instances that spin up in seconds. PostgreSQL 19 hit Beta 4 with a release candidate expected in early October, including an automatic NOT IN to NOT EXISTS rewrite that unlocks better anti-join plans. A Neon branch test showed CI-passed migrations failing hard against real production data, including one that silently deleted over 2 million rows. Databricks keeps shopping, snapping up spreadsheet startup Row Zero as part of a larger acquisition spree.

**TLDR:** Google Cloud pushed AlloyDB into agent territory with sandboxed, scale-to-zero Postgres instances that spin up in seconds. ## AlloyDB adds sandboxed, scale-to-zero Postgres instances for AI agents

Google Cloud's new preview lets AI agents spin up isolated AlloyDB instances in seconds with read-only access to production data that's current to the second. The instances run on Colossus storage for sub-millisecond I/O and claim throughput north of 3 million queries per second, then scale to zero and stop billing once the agent is done. You still get the full Postgres engine underneath, including vector, full-text, and spatial search, plus direct BigQuery/Spark integration without a separate ETL step. ## CI passed all six migrations. A production-data branch passed one.

A write-up walks through what happens when you rehearse Postgres migrations against a realistic 453MB production copy instead of a 200-row CI fixture: two migrations broke on real data (duplicate emails, NULL phones), two caused multi-second stalls from table locks, and one silently deleted over 2 million orders from a missing WHERE clause. The fix is a four-step rehearsal process on a Neon copy-on-write branch under live traffic, with CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY and expand-contract patterns as the actual remedies. There's also a ready-to-use GitHub Actions workflow that runs this on every pull request. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/rV9QKp35Q)

## PostgreSQL 19 Beta 4 lands, RC expected early October

Beta 4 fixes touch REPACK, WAIT FOR deadlocks, FOR PORTION OF, MERGE/SPLIT PARTITIONS, new pg_get_*_ddl() functions, and COPY FROM SIMD optimization. Some previously planned features got reverted to keep the release schedule predictable, with a promise to revisit them later. Separately, PostgreSQL 19 will automatically rewrite NOT IN into NOT EXISTS whenever NOT NULL constraints guarantee equivalence, finally letting the planner use all anti-join strategies instead of the weaker plans NOT IN usually forces. ## Databricks buys Row Zero, says more acquisitions are coming

Row Zero, a cloud spreadsheet startup that scales past a million live rows, gets folded into Databricks' Genie AI agent for natural-language BI queries over Databricks-stored data. Terms weren't disclosed, though Row Zero had previously raised $10 million at a $40 million valuation. CEO Ali Ghodsi confirmed more deals are coming after a 2026 spree that already included Quotient AI, SiftD.ai, Panther, and Electric, backed by a $5 billion raise at a $190 billion valuation. - **MariaDB edges out MySQL and PostgreSQL by 5-25% on simple queries:** A production benchmark on a Turkish classifieds site found MariaDB 10.3.39 averaging 125.52ms versus MySQL 8.0.42's 132.40ms and PostgreSQL 12's 156.97ms, though MySQL actually won on p(99) tail latency and the author concludes the gap is too small to make engine choice the main bottleneck. - **Gartner projects 150,000 AI agents per Fortune 500 company by 2028:** That's up from fewer than 15 in 2025, with only 13% of organizations feeling prepared to govern them, which is the number behind Yugabyte's pitch for agentic multitenant Postgres with MCP-exposed lifecycle operations.
