# Amazon asked the FCC to approve 5,105 satellites for a network that sends internet straight to your phone

## Summary

Amazon has filed with the FCC to launch 5,105 satellites for a direct-to-device (D2D) network that would deliver internet connectivity directly to smartphones without cell towers. The constellation combines Amazon's existing Kuiper infrastructure with assets from Globalstar, which Amazon is acquiring for $11.6 billion. Deployment is expected to begin in 2028. The combined fleet would exceed 8,300 satellites, making Amazon the second-largest satellite operator after SpaceX, which already offers D2D service via Starlink Mobile in partnership with T-Mobile. Amazon currently has over 390 Kuiper satellites in orbit and must deploy all 3,232 first-generation satellites by July 2029. The Globalstar deal, expected to close in 2027, provides the terrestrial spectrum licenses required to legally transmit to phones.
