# Amazon ECR now supports replication backfill for existing container images

**[AWS](https://daily.dev/sources/aws)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Amazon ECR now supports replication backfill, letting you replicate existing container images to configured replication destinations with a single API call. Previously replication only applied to images pushed after the configuration was enabled, forcing manual retagging to replicate older images. The feature helps when expanding to a new AWS Region, testing disaster recovery, or meeting compliance requirements for complete image catalogs. You can run up to ten backfill jobs concurrently, track progress and per-image results through new APIs, and stop a job anytime without deleting already-replicated images. It's available in all AWS Regions where ECR is available.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I replicate existing container images in Amazon ECR to another region, not just new pushes?

Use the new replication backfill feature, which replicates existing images in your private registry to configured replication destinations with a single API call. Previously, replication only applied to images pushed after the replication configuration was enabled, so older images required manual retagging to trigger replication.

_Teams planning multi-region container strategies can follow infrastructure updates like this on daily.dev._

### How many Amazon ECR replication backfill jobs can I run at the same time?

You can run up to ten backfill jobs concurrently. You can also monitor progress and per-image results through new APIs, and stop a job at any time without deleting images that have already finished replicating.

_Those tuning disaster recovery setups can track AWS infrastructure changes like this on daily.dev._
