Amazon has launched Alexa Podcasts, an AI feature that generates on-demand podcast episodes narrated by two virtual co-hosts. Available to Alexa+ subscribers (including all Prime members), it lets users request episodes on any topic, with customizable length and tone. The feature is backed by licensing deals with over 200 news organizations including AP, Reuters, and the Washington Post. A separate capability for personalized AI-generated news briefings drawn from licensed journalism is also in development. The launch raises significant questions for publishers: while Amazon pays for content licenses, the AI-synthesized format eliminates user visits to publisher sites, potentially accelerating audience displacement. The feature is part of Amazon's broader effort to rebuild Alexa around its Nova LLM, transforming it from a voice assistant into a content-generating AI agent.
