# Amazon OpenSearch Serverless now supports up to 10,000 collections per collection group

**[AWS](https://daily.dev/sources/aws)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Amazon OpenSearch Serverless next generation now supports up to 10,000 collections per collection group, up from the previous limit of 1,500. Collection groups allow multiple collections to share OpenSearch Compute Units (OCUs) even when encrypted with different AWS KMS keys. This change benefits multi-tenant applications that provision one collection per tenant, enabling greater compute sharing, improved utilization, and lower per-collection costs without managing additional collection groups. The higher limit applies automatically to new and existing nextgen collection groups across all supported AWS regions.

## Questions this post answers

### How many collections can a single Amazon OpenSearch Serverless collection group support now?

The next generation of Amazon OpenSearch Serverless supports up to 10,000 collections per collection group, up from the previous limit of 1,500. Collection groups let multiple collections share OpenSearch Compute Units even when encrypted with different AWS KMS keys, while keeping collection-level security and access controls intact. The higher limit applies automatically to new and existing nextgen collection groups across all supported AWS Regions.

### Why would raising the OpenSearch Serverless collection limit matter for multi-tenant applications?

Multi-tenant applications that provision one collection per tenant were previously capped at 1,500 collections sharing a compute pool, limiting how many tenants could benefit from shared OCUs. Raising the limit to 10,000 lets more tenants share compute, improves utilization, and lowers per-collection cost without requiring additional collection groups to be created and managed.
