# Amazon RDS now adds full snapshot size information to the Console and API

**[AWS](https://daily.dev/sources/aws)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Amazon RDS now exposes the full snapshot size for database snapshots via a new 'FullSnapshotSizeInBytes' field in the DescribeDBSnapshots API and a corresponding 'Full Snapshot Size' column in the console. Since RDS snapshots are incremental, this new metric shows the total size of all blocks making up a snapshot (both directly stored and referenced blocks), distinct from the incremental snapshot size that only counts newly changed blocks. The feature is available across all RDS instances in all commercial AWS Regions via console, CLI, or SDKs.

## Questions this post answers

### What does the FullSnapshotSizeInBytes field in the Amazon RDS DescribeDBSnapshots API show?

It shows the total size of all blocks that make up a given RDS snapshot, including blocks stored directly in that snapshot plus blocks referenced from previous snapshots. For example, a 100 GB volume with 50 GB of actual data would show a full snapshot size of 50 GB, whether it's the first snapshot or a later one. This differs from incremental snapshot size, which only counts newly changed blocks stored in that specific snapshot.

### How is Amazon RDS full snapshot size different from incremental snapshot size?

Full snapshot size represents the total size of all blocks composing a snapshot, including both new blocks and those referenced from earlier snapshots, while incremental snapshot size only reflects the newly changed blocks stored in that particular snapshot. RDS snapshots are incremental by design, so most snapshots after the first only store modified blocks, making the full size metric useful for understanding true data footprint.
