# Amazon's $25 billion Anthropic deal, an $800 billion valuation, and what it all means

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 4 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Amazon has agreed to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, with Anthropic committing to spend over $100 billion on AWS over the next decade. The deal is framed less as a traditional investment and more as supply-chain financing, securing compute capacity on Amazon's Trainium chips. Anthropic's annualized revenue has grown from $1 billion at end of 2024 to a reported $30 billion by early April 2026, with Claude Code alone accounting for $2.5 billion. Venture investors are reportedly valuing Anthropic above $800 billion, more than double its valuation from two months prior. The company is also in early IPO discussions targeting a potential offering in October 2026. The circular deal structure — Amazon invests, Anthropic spends back on AWS — reflects a broader industry pattern of equity-for-infrastructure lock-in seen with Microsoft-OpenAI and Oracle-OpenAI.

## The deal structure

Amazon has agreed to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic: $5 billion immediately, with up to $20 billion more tied to commercial milestones. That brings Amazon's total potential investment to around $33 billion, making it by far Anthropic's largest backer.

In return, Anthropic has committed to spending over $100 billion on AWS over the next decade, locking in up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity for training and running Claude models. The compute will run on Amazon's custom Trainium chips, from Trainium2 through the not-yet-released Trainium4.

This mirrors what Amazon did with OpenAI two months earlier — a $50 billion investment paired with a massive cloud-spend commitment. The pattern is becoming a template: equity in exchange for infrastructure lock-in.

## It's really about compute

Analysts are framing this less as a traditional investment and more as supply-chain financing. Anthropic has been hitting real capacity constraints — users have seen throttling and session caps on Claude — and the deal directly addresses that by expanding inference capacity, including in Asia and Europe.

The risk is obvious: committing to $100 billion in AWS spending over ten years anchors Anthropic to Amazon's infrastructure in ways that will shape where it optimizes workloads for a long time. Similar dynamics are playing out across the industry with Microsoft-OpenAI, Oracle-OpenAI, and Nvidia-xAI. The age of pure venture funding for frontier AI labs may be over; what's replacing it looks more like structured infrastructure deals.

## The numbers behind the valuation

Venture investors have reportedly been offering Anthropic capital at valuations above $800 billion — more than double the $380 billion valuation from just two months ago.

The revenue growth driving that number is hard to ignore. Anthropic ended 2024 at roughly $1 billion in annualized revenue. By end of 2025 that had reached $9 billion. By early April 2026, it's reportedly at $30 billion annualized — something like 1,400% year-over-year growth. Claude Code alone is said to account for $2.5 billion of that.

Google and Amazon, both early investors, are sitting on billions in unrealized gains. Accel, which backed Anthropic at a $183 billion valuation, is now looking at a position worth roughly 4x that — one of the catalysts behind the firm's new $5 billion AI fund targeting late-stage deals.

## The bull and bear cases

The bull case is straightforward: the revenue growth is real, enterprise adoption is accelerating, and Anthropic's newest model, Claude Mythos, has demonstrated capabilities serious enough that the company restricted access to just 11 organizations under a $100 million defensive initiative after it autonomously discovered thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities.

The bear case is also real. An $800 billion valuation on $30 billion in revenue is a 27x multiple on a company burning enormous amounts of compute. Competition from OpenAI, Google, and a growing list of open-weight models isn't slowing down. And the $100 billion AWS commitment, while solving near-term capacity problems, is a long-term constraint.

Anthropicis also reportedly in early IPO discussions with Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley, with a potential offering as early as October 2026 that could raise over $60 billion. Whether the public markets will price this the way late-stage VCs currently are is a different question entirely.

There's also a legal wrinkle: Anthropic is currently contesting a Department of Defense supply-chain risk designation in court, which could complicate any path to government contracts.

## What this looks like from the outside

The circular structure of these deals — Amazon invests in Anthropic, Anthropic spends that money back on Amazon — has a slightly dizzying quality to it. The cash flows in a loop, but what's actually being exchanged is access to compute and a bet on which AI lab wins. Amazon is essentially paying to ensure Anthropic's models run on Amazon hardware, and Anthropic is essentially trading long-term infrastructure flexibility for the capacity it needs right now.

Whether that's a good trade depends entirely on whether Anthropic's growth trajectory holds. At $30 billion in annualized revenue and climbing, the optimists have a reasonable case. At an $800 billion valuation, they need to be right for a very long time.
