Amazon has launched Prime in South Africa at R59/month or R399/year, undercutting its own standalone Prime Video price of R79/month. The move signals an aggressive push for market share after a deliberately slow two-year retail entry. South African e-commerce is now a crowded battleground with Amazon, Takealot, Shoprite's Sixty60, Walmart, Temu, Shein, and grocery chains all competing. Sixty60 leads with 47.7% sales growth to R18.9-billion. The broader online retail market is on track to hit R130-billion in 2025, growing ~35% annually. Pharmacy chains Clicks and Dis-Chem are notably absent from the subscription and on-demand delivery race despite having strong assets for it.
