# AMD, NVIDIA, OpenAI & Others Form An Optical Scale-up Consortium

## Summary

AMD, Broadcom, Meta, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and OpenAI have jointly formed the Optical Compute Interconnect (OCI) Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) consortium. The group aims to create an open, multi-vendor ecosystem for optical scale-up interconnects to replace copper-based connectivity in AI clusters. The OCI specification uses NRZ modulation and WDM optical technology, shifting from a module-centric to a silicon-centric model. The roadmap targets scaling from 200Gbps per direction (GEN1) to 3.2Tbps per fiber and beyond, supporting pluggable, on-board, and co-packaged optics. Intel is notably absent from the consortium.
