# AMD Working On Ryzen Overclocking Driver For Linux

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

AMD has posted patches for AOD, a WMI driver for Ryzen CPUs. Posted by AMD engineer Shyam Sundar S K, it exposes CPU tunables via sysfs, including Package Power Tracking (PPT), Thermal Design Current (TDC), and Electrical Design Current (EDC) limits, plus their supported ranges. It also supports SMT toggling at the platform level and reading current memory clocks. Power tunable changes apply only after a reboot, not in real time. No GUI app has been patched yet, and GUIs are left to independent developers and desktop environments, similar to AMD's Radeon driver approach. The patches are posted on the platform-driver-x86 mailing list for review.

## Questions this post answers

### How can I control Ryzen CPU power limits like PPT, TDC, and EDC on Linux?

AMD has posted a new Linux kernel driver called AOD (AMD Overclocking) that exposes these controls via sysfs. It lets you set Package Power Tracking, Thermal Design Current, and Electrical Design Current limits, read their supported ranges, toggle SMT at the platform level, and read current memory clocks. Changes to power tunables take effect only after a reboot, not instantly.

_Track kernel driver updates like this AOD overclocking patch set as they progress on daily.dev._

### Is there an official AMD GUI tool for overclocking Ryzen CPUs on Linux, similar to Ryzen Master on Windows?

No official AMD GUI has been patched alongside the new AOD overclocking driver. All controls are exposed only through the sysfs interface for now, following the same pattern AMD used with its Radeon graphics driver settings, where independent developers and desktop environments build their own GUIs on top of the raw kernel interface.

_Developers building Linux hardware control GUIs can follow sysfs driver changes like this one on daily.dev._
