# AMDGPU HDMI 2.1 FRL To Be Initially Disabled-By-Default

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The sixth iteration of HDMI 2.1 FRL (Fixed Rate Link) patches for the open-source AMDGPU Linux kernel driver has been posted to the mailing list. A key change in this revision is that FRL support will be disabled by default initially. Users who want to enable it must boot with the kernel parameter `amdgpu.dc_feature_mask=0x400`. The reason for the default-off decision is that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support is not yet in place — enabling FRL without VRR could be a regression for users with FRL-capable displays. Once HDMI VRR support lands, FRL is planned to be enabled by default. The patches also include Display Stream Compression (DSC) support and a few bug fixes, with hopes of landing in the Linux v7.2 cycle.
