The term 'Agentic Development Platform' (ADP) is gaining traction in platform engineering circles, but the concept is less revolutionary than the new acronym implies. ADP is essentially an Internal Developer Platform (IDP) extended to treat AI agents as first-class users alongside humans. Agents need scoped identities, quota enforcement, and observability just like human developers — the underlying infrastructure remains Kubernetes and the core challenges remain governance, cost control, reliability, and self-service. Building a separate parallel platform for AI workloads is discouraged; instead, teams should extend their existing IDP to accommodate non-human actors. The real test is whether the platform can support agents without constant human supervision.
