# An Attempt At A Useful Desktop OS For Microcontrollers

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

SylphideOS is a general-purpose GUI operating system aimed at multiple microcontroller platforms. It runs on the FreeRTOS kernel and presents a GUI that appears to owe a lot to early Macintosh machines. It drives a screen via a framebuffer and supports keyboard and storage interfaces. It currently runs on RP2350 and selected ESP32 platforms, plus an emulator. Unlike some microcontroller operating systems that provide a user interface for a binary bootloader, this one marks an interesting departure.
