One user with only $0.19 in actual charges received a $2.5 billion estimate. AWS identified the root cause within 90 minutes, paused billing updates to prevent further inflation, and began recomputing all estimates. Corrected figures were expected by Saturday, July 18 at noon Pacific time. The incident caused panic among users, with some reportedly destroying cloud resources in response.
