A paper in the journal Space Weather proposes a concept called StormWall: deploying roughly 384,000 kg of neutral alkali metal gas into Geosynchronous Earth Orbit using solar-powered satellites to absorb up to 50% of the energy from a major geomagnetic storm like the 1859 Carrington Event. The ionized gas would act as a buffer, protecting both terrestrial power grids and satellites in lower orbits. Researchers estimate the required mass could be delivered in approximately six SpaceX Starship launches.
